Schema kgmid links

Checking schema, I see people using sameas or identifier attributes like:

https://www.google.com/search?q=brand+city+Web+Design&kponly&kgmid=/m/02wdy8

What do these do? The kgmid is the machine ID - in this case for 'web development' - but the url ends in a blank page.

Is this intended to associate the brand + city with the term web development?

If they are using them in @id, they are dumb, its a labeling system in JSON and does nothing more than serve as a label.

If they are using them in sameAS for a business, they are probably trying to associate the brand with that given entity.

If they are using them in "about" they are working to tell Google what the page is about.

If they are using them in "mentions" they are working to tell Google what topics the page my mention.

Those are just four things that they "could" be trying to do.

In your opinion Clint, would this be common practice or beneficial to do? If I look at the term in this case I can imagine it in the about, sameAS would be trying to associate a webdesign agency with a local term which Google may or may not like, as I can imagine this would be more of a listing type term and Google might dislike it?
